What you need to know before you goJust off Big Pine Key is what many locals consider the most beautiful reef in the Middle or Lower Keys - Looe Key Reef. It'a a U-shaped 'groove and spur' reef named after the HMS Looe which supposedly ran aground there in 1744.
The area is designated a Sanctuary Preservation Area and is therefore protected from fishing and lobstering. The reef is home to over 150 species of fish including yellowtail, angelfish, parrotfish, barracuda, sergeant majors, and moray eel.
