What you need to know before you goThe variety of tropical marine life that makes Islamorada a leading sportfishing destination makes it a great place for scuba diving as well. Here you can expect to share the water with giant green morays, loggerhead turtles and nurse sharks.
Dive charters have access to both great dive sites south of Islamorada as well as the reefs at the southern edge of Key Largo. Some of the best dive spots include:
- Alligator Reef - named for the USS Alligator, a schooner that ran aground and sunk here in the early 1800's, is one of the largest reefs in the Keys. It contains excellent examples of both hard and soft corals as well as lots of sponges.
- The Eagle - The wreck of a 269 feet long freighter that was made into an artificial reef after the ship caught fire in 1985. In 1998 the ship broke into two pieces during Hurricane Georges.
- Cheeck Rocks - is an easy dive for snorkeling or beginning divers. It contains small patches of brain corals and soft corals.
The currents off Islamorada have a reputation for being strong. But they are usually not too bad.
