Everything you need to plan a unique vacation in Key Largo Scuba Diving in Key Largo What you need to know before you goFor scuba diving and snorkeling, nothing in the United States can beat Key Largo, where the crystal clear waters provide you with spectacular views of the underwater world. And for the beginner, Key Largo is a great place to get your diving certification because many of the dive sites are shallow and therefore ideal for novices.
The majority of the reef system off Key Largo was incorporated into the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in 1990 -- a 2,800-square-nautical-mile protected area. Because of this, the overall health of the reefs has stabilized and the levels of marine life have increased dramatically. Most dive sites are equipped with convenient mooring buoys to save the reef from anchors and make it easy for boaters to tie off.
The best places to dive include:
- Statue of Christ of the Abyss - a bronze statue that is nestled between the coral formations of Key Largo Dry Rocks reef in just 25 feet of water.
- Molasses Reef - High profile coral heads and abundant marine life define this popular reef.
- Elbow Reef - This reef offers several historic shipwrecks, as well as the thrill of face-to-face encounters with barracuda and moray eels.
Key Largo also boast plenty of old wrecks to dive in, including the City of Washington which lies in 25 feet of water east of Key Largo, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Duane which lies upright on a sandy bottom in 120 feet of water one mile south of Molasses Reef and the 510-foot Navy transport ship Spiegel Grove which was intentionally sunk in June 2002.
