What you need to know before you goFor scuba divers, Marathon offers plenty of wrecks and coral reefs for beginning divers and snorkelers, as well as spectacular drop-offs for experienced divers.
Two of the most popular dive spots are:
- Sombrero Reef - off the south end of Marathon, offers one of the most beautiful sections of the Florida Keys reef system, with large fingers of coral separated by narrow sandbeds.
- Looe Key Reef - located off Big Pine Key, it's a 'U' shaped reef that 200 yards wide and 800 yards long, with plenty of marine life. Many locals consider Looe Key Reef to be the most beautiful reef in the Middle or Lower Keys.
Both of these areas are designated as Sanctuary Preservation Area and are protected by the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. So, fishing and lobstering are strictly prohibited.
Some of the wrecks available include:
- The Thunderbolt - Sitting upright in 115 feet of water, the Thunderbolt is a thrilling dive, for those divers qualified to make it.
- The Delta Shoal - This dive site contains the wreckage from several old wooden schooners and galleons in 10 to 35 feet of water.
