Planning Your Space Coast Vacation
What you need to know before you goJust 35 miles east of Orlando, Florida's Space Coast offers 72 miles of coastline, unspoiled nature preserves, and (of course) Kennedy Space Center.
Located approximately seven miles south of New Smyrna Beach is the northern beach access to the Canaveral National Seashore. The park is a barrier island that features ocean, beach, dunes, hammock, lagoon, salt marsh and pine flatland habitats for those who either hike or kayak in. This 24 miles of beachfront is undeveloped, so be sure to bring any supplies you may need for the day. The Kennedy Space Center occupies the southern end of the island and temporary closures are possible due to launch-related activities.
For the angler, Mosquito Lagoon offers anglers a light tackle or saltwater flats fishing experience they'll never forget, while offshore fishing charters leave from Cape Canaveral and Melbourne.
If you'd rather not rough it, Cocoa Beach is the epicenter of Florida's surfing scene and home of the world famous Ron Jon Surf Shop. The atmosphere here is laid back with the character of a beach town from the day's when "I Dream of Jeannie" was on the air. Further south, the beaches off Melbourne are quieter still.
On the mainland, the village of Cocoa has restored its historic streets by installing specialty shops, ice cream and pizza joints, and other fun stops into the riverfront district.
